Executive Summary

Summary

Shutdowns are big events; the stakes are high and there is a lot of tension from people at different levels in the organization. Also, there is a tremendous amount of distinct information held by one person that\'s needed by another. The key to successful shutdowns is constant communications. Communication is a two-step process; it requires transmission and reception. If the recipient doesn\'t read the message, then no communication has occurred. To encourage communication, it is important to create an atmosphere where people can freely talk about their problems. Every shutdown is managed by a series of meetings. Even with all the improvements in technology, meetings are still the key communication tools for shutdowns.
